What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn a broad topic into a focused research question. They gather relevant facts from more than one trustworthy source and sort notes into useful groups.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can ask a focused question, select trustworthy sources, and record only relevant information. The student groups notes by subtopic and can explain why each source is reliable.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may trust the first search result or assume every website is accurate. They may copy whole sentences, collect unrelated facts, or use several pages that repeat one source.
How to Assess It
- Give students a research question and three short source cards. Ask them to choose two reliable sources and sort four useful notes under labeled headings.
