What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students create a focused research question and gather relevant information from several trustworthy sources. They combine the evidence into an answer, then identify new questions raised by their findings.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose several sources by checking the author, date, evidence, and purpose. They combine relevant details into a clear answer and generate a related question that extends the research.

Common Misconceptions

Students may trust the first search result, assume every .org site is dependable, or ignore publication dates and author credentials. They may collect unrelated facts, repeat information from similar sources, or write follow-up questions that do not build on their findings.

How to Assess It

Give students three short source cards about school start times. Ask them to choose two reliable sources, answer the question in two sentences, and add one follow-up question.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place four printed source pages at stations, then have students label each reliable or questionable and underline evidence for their decision.

  2. Ask students to write which source they would trust most about screen time, then defend their choice using author, date, and evidence.

  3. Play Source Showdown by revealing two source cards per round and awarding points for choosing and justifying the more reliable one.

  4. Research a proposed change to the school lunch menu using district data, student surveys, and a nutrition source, then propose a follow-up question.
