What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students investigate a focused question using more than one trustworthy source. They judge each source, gather relevant evidence, and revise the question if their findings point toward a clearer direction.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can locate information in several trustworthy sources and explain why each source is useful. The student takes notes, compares findings, and narrows or adjusts the research question when new information changes the focus.

Common Misconceptions

Students may trust the first search result, confuse popularity with reliability, or use several sources that repeat the same weak claim. They may also keep a question that is too broad instead of narrowing it as they learn.

How to Assess It

Give students three short source summaries and a broad question about school start times. Ask them to choose two useful sources, explain their choices, and rewrite the question more narrowly.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place printed source cards around the room, then have pairs sort them by reliability and select evidence for a focused question.

  2. Ask students to write how the question “How does technology affect people?” could be narrowed after reading about sleep and phone use.

  3. Run a Source Detective game where teams earn points for identifying authors, dates, evidence, bias, and links to the research question.

  4. Have students research one proposed change to the school lunch menu, using nutrition data, student surveys, and a dietitian’s article.
