What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students begin with a focused research question, then narrow or revise it as evidence changes their understanding. They gather useful evidence from several trustworthy sources. They combine ideas across sources to form a supported answer and cite each source.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can explain why each source is trustworthy, relevant, and supported by sound evidence. Their revised question is narrow enough to answer with available evidence. Their final response connects ideas from multiple sources and cites them correctly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may keep a question so broad that their sources cannot answer it well. They may trust the first search results or sources that confirm their views. They may list separate source summaries instead of connecting evidence, disagreements, and patterns.
How to Assess It
- Give students three short source cards on teen sleep, including one weak source. Ask them to reject one source, narrow the question, and combine the other two sources in a two-sentence answer.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups printed source cards to sort as reliable or questionable, then arrange usable evidence beneath a narrowed research question.
After reading three sources, explain how your original question should change and name the finding that caused the change.
Run a synthesis matrix race where teams place evidence into agreement, disagreement, or new insight columns and defend each placement.
Investigate cafeteria food waste using lunch counts, a custodian interview, and one published source, then recommend one practical change.
