What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students develop a focused question about a current issue and gather useful information from several credible sources. They compare claims and evidence, then combine findings into a clear answer with citations.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student selects credible sources with different perspectives and explains how each source helps answer the question. The final response connects evidence, addresses conflicting information, and uses accurate citations.

Common Misconceptions

Students may collect separate source summaries without connecting ideas across them. They may trust the first search result, rely heavily on quotations, or ignore evidence that challenges their position.

How to Assess It

Give students three short sources on one issue. Ask them to answer a focused question in one paragraph using two sources and explaining how the evidence connects.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups four source cards on a local issue, then have them rank credibility and label each source’s claim, evidence, and limits.

  2. Ask students to write: How do two sources explain the same issue differently, and which explanation is better supported?

  3. Run a synthesis matrix race where pairs place evidence from six excerpts into claim, counterclaim, cause, effect, and solution columns.

  4. Have students prepare a one-page recommendation on a current school policy for the principal, using a survey, news report, and official data.
