What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read short nonfiction texts and identify the central idea and supporting details. They use headings, captions, maps, graphs, and pictures to understand information. They also explain the author’s purpose or opinion and point to supporting evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students state the central idea and select details that support it. They explain how text features add meaning and identify the author’s purpose, opinion, and evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose an interesting detail as the central idea. They may treat every sentence as evidence or name a text feature without explaining how it helps.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short nonfiction paragraph with a heading and picture. Ask them to write the central idea, one supporting detail, and how one feature helps.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a short article cut into headings, captions, pictures, and paragraphs, then have them rebuild it and explain their choices.
Read a short animal article and ask, “What does the author want us to learn, and which details prove it?”
Play Detail Detective by having teams sort sentence cards into supports the central idea or does not support it.
Use a school lunch menu or weather report to identify its purpose, useful text features, and the information readers need.
