What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read nonfiction to determine the central idea, supporting details, author’s purpose, and text structure. They also explain how headings, captions, diagrams, and other features add meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify the central idea and connect relevant details to it. They explain the author’s purpose, recognize common text structures, and use text features to build meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose an interesting detail instead of the central idea. They may name a text feature without explaining how it helps, or confuse evidence with personal knowledge.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short article with a heading and caption. Ask them to state the central idea, cite two supporting details, and explain how the caption helps.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a short article, then have them sort cut-up sentences into central idea, supporting detail, and unrelated detail groups.
Ask students to write: What does the author want readers to understand, and which two details best show that?
Play Text Feature Match by pairing cards showing headings, captions, diagrams, and glossaries with cards explaining how each one helps readers.
Have students examine a school lunch menu and explain how headings, labels, and categories help them find specific information.
