What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use sound-spelling patterns, syllables, and familiar word parts to read words accurately. They read connected text smoothly and use punctuation to guide expression.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students decode unfamiliar words by using letter patterns, syllables, and word parts. They read grade-level text accurately, at a steady pace, with phrasing that supports meaning.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may guess from pictures or the first letter instead of reading through the whole word. They may read accurately but too slowly, or ignore punctuation and phrasing.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a short grade-level passage to read aloud, then ask them to decode two unfamiliar words and retell the main idea.

Ways to Teach It
Give students letter tiles to build, change, and read words with common vowel teams and endings.
Ask students to explain which word part helped them decode an unfamiliar word in a short passage.
Play word sort relay with cards grouped by vowel pattern, syllable type, or inflectional ending.
Use a school lunch menu and have students decode food names, read prices, and practice fluent phrasing.
