What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students apply grade-level grammar, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when they write. They also edit sentences to find and correct convention errors.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students write complete sentences with correct capitals, punctuation, grammar, and grade-level spelling. They can reread a short draft, find errors, and make accurate corrections.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may capitalize every noun or forget capitals in names, places, and dates. They may confuse plural endings with possessive apostrophes. They also may omit end punctuation or spell words only by sound.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: Rewrite “on monday maya didnt bring her two pencils” with correct capitalization, spelling, apostrophe, and punctuation.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips, capital letter cards, apostrophe tiles, and punctuation marks to repair three incorrectly written sentences.
Ask students to write two sentences about yesterday, then explain one capitalization or punctuation choice to a partner.
Play Convention Detective by displaying sentences and awarding one point for each correctly identified and repaired error.
Have students edit a short classroom notice so names, dates, spelling, and end punctuation are correct before posting it.
