What Students Need to Do

Students apply standard English grammar, usage, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling in grade-level writing. They proofread drafts, correct errors, and make sentences easier to understand.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students produce clear sentences with consistent grammar, accurate punctuation, correct capitalization, and standard spelling. They can edit their own work and explain why a correction is needed.

Common Misconceptions

Students may rely on spell-check and miss correctly spelled words used incorrectly, such as “their” and “there.” They may also create comma splices or sentence fragments when combining ideas.

How to Assess It

Give students a four-sentence paragraph containing six errors in grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. Ask them to correct each error and explain two changes.

   Give pairs sentence strips with fragments, run-ons, and correct sentences, then have them sort and revise the incorrect examples.

   Ask students to explain which convention error most disrupts meaning in a sample paragraph and support their choice with evidence.

   Run an editing relay where teams correct one marked sentence at a time and earn points for accurate explanations.

   Have students proofread a mock job application email for grammar, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation before sending it to a supervisor.
