What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students produce complete sentences with consistent verb tense, correct agreement, and clear pronoun references. They edit punctuation, capitals, and spelling so errors do not distract readers or change meaning.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can find and correct errors in a paragraph, then explain the rule behind each change. The same control appears in first drafts and revisions, including dialogue, quotations, and complex sentences.

Common Misconceptions

Students often join complete sentences with commas, shift verb tense, or match verbs to the nearest noun instead of the subject. They may rely on spell-check, overlook homophones, and place commas wherever they hear a pause.

How to Assess It

Give students a six-sentence paragraph with a comma splice, tense shift, agreement error, unclear pronoun, capitalization error, and homophone error. Ask them to correct and label each error.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Print a flawed paragraph, cut it into sentences, and have pairs rebuild, punctuate, and annotate each correction with a rule.

  2. Ask students to revise "The team lost their lead, they was frustrated" and defend each edit in three sentences.

  3. Run an editing relay where teams correct one projected sentence at a time and earn points only when they name the rule.

  4. Have students proofread a mock job application email, correcting errors that could make the writer seem careless or unclear.
