What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students apply grade-level grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling when writing and revising. They identify errors, make corrections, and explain why each correction follows standard English rules.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students write complete sentences with consistent verb tense, correct subject-verb and pronoun agreement, and clear punctuation. They can find errors in a draft, correct them, and name the rule they used.

Common Misconceptions

Students may write fragments or run-ons because speech hides sentence boundaries, or choose verb forms by sound instead of checking agreement. They may treat every pause as a comma, capitalize words for emphasis, or trust spell-check with homophones such as their and there.

How to Assess It

Give students a five-sentence paragraph with eight grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling errors. Ask them to correct each error and explain two changes.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips with agreement, comma, capitalization, and spelling errors, then have them correct and sort each error by type.

  2. Ask students which edits make a paragraph easier to read, then require each student to defend one change with a rule.

  3. Run a four-corner editing game where students move to grammar, punctuation, capitalization, or spelling after identifying each projected error.

  4. Have students edit a short school announcement for the morning news, then produce a clean final copy for a real audience.
