What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use standard grammar and write complete, correctly formed sentences. They edit their work for punctuation, capitalization, and grade-level spelling.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students write complete sentences with consistent verb tense, correct agreement, and clear pronoun use. They apply grade-level punctuation, capitalization, and spelling when drafting and editing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use sentence fragments, join sentences with commas, or shift verb tense. They may also confuse commonly used words, omit commas, and capitalize ordinary nouns.
How to Assess It
- Give students a four-sentence paragraph with six errors in grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. Ask them to rewrite it correctly and label each correction.

Give pairs printed sentences to cut apart, rearrange, punctuate, and combine into a correct paragraph.
Ask students to write five sentences explaining which convention errors make a message hardest to understand and why.
Play an editing relay where teams correct one marked sentence at a time, then explain each change.
Have students edit a mock school announcement for grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling before reading it aloud.
