What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students write clear sentences and edit drafts for problems with sentence structure, verb use, pronouns, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. They apply corrections without relying only on digital tools.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can submit a clear paragraph with few errors and accurately revise a flawed passage. The student can identify each problem and explain why the correction works.

Common Misconceptions

Students often join complete sentences with only a comma or mistake fragments for deliberate style. They may confuse possessive and plural apostrophes, shift verb tense, and trust autocorrect with homophones.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “Fix every error: After Maya finished the lab, she write her conclusion it didnt include the results.” Students rewrite it and label two corrections.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips with fragments, run-ons, and correct sentences; students sort them, then repair each incorrect strip with a marker.

  2. Have students choose punctuation to join two related complete sentences, then defend their choice using two sample sentences.

  3. Run an editing relay where teams correct one marked error at a time in a flawed paragraph and explain each change.

  4. Students proofread a mock job application email, correcting errors before discussing how mistakes affect the writer’s credibility.
