Students apply standard English conventions when writing and revising. They check grammar, usage, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling, then correct errors that interfere with meaning.

Students produce polished writing with consistent grammar, usage, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. They can edit a draft and explain how their corrections improve clarity.

Common Misconceptions

Students may trust spell-check even when it misses homophones, omitted words, or incorrect verb forms. They may also add commas wherever speech pauses or shift verb tense without noticing.

How to Assess It

Give students a six-sentence paragraph containing eight errors in grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. Ask them to correct each error and explain two changes.

   Give pairs a printed paragraph, colored pens, and an editing key to mark and correct grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling errors.

   Ask students to compare two versions of a sentence and explain which one is clearer, more correct, and better suited to formal writing.

   Run an editing relay where teams correct one error at a time in projected sentences and briefly justify each change.

4. 04

   Have students revise a sample college email or workplace memo for correct conventions, clear sentences, and an appropriate formal tone.
