What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students produce polished academic and workplace writing that follows accepted English conventions. They control sentence boundaries, agreement, verb tense, pronouns, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling, then edit errors before submitting.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student writes complete, varied sentences with consistent grammar and accurate mechanics. The student can find, correct, and explain errors in a draft without relying only on editing software.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often join complete sentences with only a comma or use semicolons where commas belong. They may miss agreement errors, unclear pronouns, misplaced apostrophes, and capitalization mistakes. Many trust spell-check even when a correctly spelled word is used incorrectly.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Correct this sentence and explain two changes: “On tuesday the committee review the students applications, however they didnt choose a finalist.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips with fragments, comma splices, and complete sentences, then have them rebuild each into a correct paragraph.
Compare two versions of an email to a principal, then write which version sounds more credible and cite specific convention choices.
Run an error-hunt relay using four short paragraphs with mistakes in agreement, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling.
Have students edit a cover letter for sentence boundaries, apostrophes, pronouns, capitalization, and spelling before exchanging it with a partner.
