What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students write complete, clear sentences and keep verb tense, agreement, and pronoun use consistent. They proofread for sentence boundaries, commas, apostrophes, capitals, and grade-level spelling.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can draft and edit a clear paragraph with accurate sentence structure, word forms, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. Their corrections preserve the intended meaning, and they can explain why each change is needed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often join complete sentences with only a comma or leave dependent clauses as fragments. They may confuse possessives with plurals, shift verb tense, or use object pronouns as subjects. Many trust spell-check even when it selects the wrong homophone.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Rewrite and explain each correction: “on monday Maya and me finished the project, however we didnt recieve our grades.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips with fragments, run-ons, and complete sentences; students sort them, repair errors, and explain each change.
Project two punctuated versions of one sentence and ask students to defend which version communicates the intended meaning.
Run a four-station editing relay using short paragraphs with errors in verbs, pronouns, commas, capitals, apostrophes, and spelling.
Have students edit a draft school announcement for grammar, capitals, punctuation, and spelling before comparing it with the published version.
