What Students Need to Do

Students apply standard English grammar, usage, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when they write. They revise and edit sentences so ideas are clear and errors do not distract the reader.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students write complete sentences with consistent verb tense and correct subject-verb agreement. They use grade-level capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and usage, then explain and correct errors during revision.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse sentence fragments with complete sentences or join clauses with only a comma. They may also misuse apostrophes, shift verb tense, miss subject-verb agreement, or rely on spell-check for homophones.

How to Assess It

Give students a four-sentence paragraph with a fragment, comma splice, agreement error, and misspelled homophone. Ask them to correct each error and label the rule used.

   Give pairs sentence strips with fragments, run-ons, and correct sentences, then have them sort and repair each incorrect example.

   Ask students to explain which grammar or punctuation error most changes a sentence's meaning, using two edited examples as evidence.

   Run an editing relay where teams correct one marked error at a time in a short paragraph and name the rule.

4. 04

   Have students proofread a mock school announcement for grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling before posting a clean final copy.
