What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students apply standard English grammar, usage, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling in their writing. They revise sentences to make meaning clear and choices consistent.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students produce polished writing with consistent grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. They can edit an unfamiliar passage and explain how their corrections improve clarity.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may trust spellcheck to catch homophones, missing words, and incorrect verb forms. They may also treat fragments, commas, and semicolons as style choices without checking sentence structure.
How to Assess It
- Give students a five-sentence paragraph containing six convention errors. Ask them to correct each error and explain one revision in a margin note.

Ways to Teach It
Build a paragraph from sentence strips, then add punctuation cards and rearrange clauses to create clear, varied sentences.
Write a short response explaining when a sentence fragment is an error and when an author might use one deliberately.
Play an editing relay where teams correct one grammar, punctuation, spelling, or capitalization error before passing the paragraph.
Revise a poorly written workplace email so its grammar, punctuation, tone, and formatting fit a supervisor or customer.
