What Students Need to Do

Students apply grade-level grammar, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. They also reread their work, spot errors, and make corrections that improve clarity.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students write complete, varied sentences with consistent verb tense and correct subject-verb and pronoun agreement. They can find and fix errors in capitalization, punctuation, grammar, and spelling.

Common Misconceptions

Students may shift verb tense within a paragraph or choose a verb that does not agree with the subject. They may also miss commas, capitals, apostrophes, or spelling errors because a sentence still sounds correct aloud.

How to Assess It

Give students a short paragraph with six errors in verb tense, agreement, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. Ask them to correct each error and explain one change.

   Give pairs sentence strips with grammar and punctuation errors, then have them revise and physically rebuild each sentence correctly.

   Ask students to explain which correction matters most in a flawed paragraph and support their choice with a grammar rule.

   Play an editing relay where teams correct one marked error at a time in a projected paragraph.

   Have students edit a mock school announcement for clear sentences, correct verb tense, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling.
