What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use grade-appropriate grammar when speaking and writing. They apply capitalization, punctuation, and spelling so sentences are complete and clear.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can write a short paragraph with complete sentences, consistent verb tense, correct agreement, and accurate end punctuation. Most familiar words are spelled correctly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write fragments or join several ideas without correct punctuation. They may confuse homophones, shift verb tense, or miss subject-verb agreement. Some capitalize common nouns or place commas randomly.
How to Assess It
- Give students three sentences containing six errors in grammar, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. Ask them to rewrite each sentence correctly and explain one correction.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips with missing capitals and punctuation, then have them rebuild and copy each sentence correctly.
Ask students to write four sentences about recess, then trade papers and explain two convention corrections to a partner.
Play Convention Relay, where teams correct one grammar, spelling, capitalization, or punctuation error before passing the marker.
Have students edit a sample school announcement for grammar, spelling, capitals, and punctuation before reading it aloud.
