What Students Need to Do: Students write complete sentences using grade-level grammar, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. They reread their work and correct errors so each sentence is clear.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student writes complete sentences with clear subjects and verbs. They use capitals, end punctuation, grade-level spelling, correct verb forms, and agreement. They can reread and fix errors independently.
Common Misconceptions: Students may write fragments or join several ideas without punctuation. They may capitalize common nouns, forget capitals for names, confuse irregular forms such as children and saw, or rely on sound alone for spelling.
How to Assess It: Give students this sentence to rewrite correctly: “yesterday my two childs walk to the park they seen ducks.” Ask them to correct every convention error.

Lesson moves

Give pairs word and punctuation cards to build, revise, and copy complete sentences with correct capitals, verb forms, and end marks.
Ask students to write four sentences about yesterday, then circle capitals, underline verbs, and box punctuation before sharing one revision.
Play Convention Detective: teams correct one error at a time in projected sentences and explain the rule to earn a point.
Have students write a classroom sign or family note, then edit spelling, capitals, grammar, and punctuation before displaying or sending it.
