What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find the main point of a nonfiction text and identify details that explain it. They use text features and visuals to gather information. They also notice when an author shares an opinion about the topic.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students state what a text is mostly about and point to details that support it. They use headings, captions, pictures, and glossaries to find information. They compare information in the words and visuals and recognize an author's opinion.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose one interesting fact as the central idea. They may ignore captions or assume pictures only decorate the page. They may confuse an author's opinion with a stated fact.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short passage with a heading, picture, and caption. Ask them to state the central idea, name one supporting detail, and explain what the caption adds.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a nonfiction page and sticky notes to label the heading, caption, picture, glossary word, central idea, and supporting details.
Read a short animal article, then ask students to write: What does the author want you to know most, and which detail proves it?
Play Detail Match by having students pair central idea cards with supporting detail cards, then explain each match to a partner.
Examine a school lunch menu and nutrition chart, then discuss what information comes from words, numbers, headings, and pictures.
