What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify central ideas, relevant evidence, and the author’s purpose in nonfiction texts. They analyze how ideas, claims, and text structures develop across a passage.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students state the central idea accurately and support it with relevant evidence. They explain how the author organizes ideas, builds claims, and shapes the reader’s response.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose an interesting detail instead of the central idea. They may treat every statement as equally reliable or confuse the author’s purpose with the topic.
How to Assess It
- Give students a one-page article and ask them to state its central idea, cite two supporting details, and explain the author’s purpose.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups printed article paragraphs to arrange in a logical order, then have them explain which text clues guided their choices.
Ask students to write: Which detail best supports the author’s main claim, and why is it stronger than another detail?
Play an evidence match game where students pair claim cards with supporting quotations, then reject details that are related but weak.
Compare a school announcement with a news report on the same event, noting differences in purpose, detail, tone, and intended audience.
