The standard

Derive the formula for the sum of a finite geometric series (when the common ratio is not 1), and use the formula to solve problems.

What this standard means

Students need to see why a geometric series has a shortcut, not just plug into it. They should start with repeated multiplication, write the sum, multiply by the common ratio, subtract the two equations, and solve for the sum.

Mastery means students can derive the formula, choose correct first term, ratio, and number of terms, then use it in money or growth problems. Common mistakes include using the last term as the first term, forgetting ratio cannot be 1, and mixing up number of payments with number of years.

Ways to teach it

  • Use paper strips cut in halves or thirds to build a finite geometric series, then record each piece and total as fractions.
  • Prompt students: Explain why multiplying the whole sum by r helps most terms cancel when you subtract.
  • Give a 3-question exit ticket: derive a 4-term series formula, identify a, r, n, and compute one sum.
  • Have students compare two phone payment plans with decreasing monthly discounts, then find total savings using a finite geometric series.
