What this standard means
Students need to use angle relationships to find missing angle measures. They should know that straight lines make 180 degrees, right angles make 90 degrees, vertical angles match, and adjacent angles share a side. They also need to turn those facts into simple equations, then solve them.
Mastery looks like choosing the right relationship without guessing, labeling the figure, writing an equation such as x + 35 = 90 or 2x + 20 = 180, and checking if the answer fits the diagram. Students often mix up supplementary and complementary angles, assume angles are equal because they look close, or skip the equation step.
Ways to teach it
- Give pairs angle cards and a ruler-drawn intersecting-lines diagram, then have them label vertical, adjacent, complementary, and supplementary angle pairs.
- Ask students to explain which equation fits a diagram better, x + 48 = 180 or x + 48 = 90, and why.
- Show one diagram with three missing angles, and have students write one equation and solve for one unknown on a sticky note.
- Use a street map intersection photo and ask students to identify angle pairs and find a missing turn angle from one given measure.
