What This Standard Means
Students need to give a short spoken report or opinion that makes sense from start to finish. They should have a clear main idea, put points in a logical order, and support them with facts, examples, and specific details. They also need to speak clearly, loudly enough, and not too fast.
Mastery sounds organized and easy to follow. The listener can name the main idea and remember several supporting details. Students often get stuck by listing facts with no order, giving vague details, reading straight from notes, or speaking too softly or quickly.
Ways to Teach It
- Have students sort fact cards about a topic into introduction, three support points, and closing, then present from the sorted stack.
- Prompt students: Which detail best supports your opinion, and why would it help convince a listener?
- Use a one-minute partner presentation with a checklist for main idea, logical order, two facts, clear voice, and steady pace.
- Connect to school life by having students present a proposal for a new recess activity using facts, reasons, and descriptive details.
