What This Standard Means

Students need to stand in front of others and share information or a story in a clear order. They should include facts or details that help the listener picture what happened or understand the topic. They also need to use a voice that can be heard and a pace that is not rushed.

Mastery sounds organized, specific, and easy to follow. Students name the topic, add useful details, and end clearly. Common trouble spots are mumbling, reading every word from a paper, adding random details, or racing through the talk because they feel nervous.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give students a photo card and three sticky notes to plan a one-minute report with a beginning, two details, and an ending.
  • Ask students to write and share: What detail would help your listener picture this best, and why?
  • Use a simple checklist during partner talks: clear topic, two relevant details, audible voice, steady pace.
  • Have students give a short weather, sports, or classroom news report using facts gathered from the morning announcements or class data.
