What This Standard Means

Students need to listen to a read-aloud, video, audio clip, or class presentation and tell the main points back in their own words. They should name who or what it was about, what happened or was explained, and include a few details that matter.

Mastery looks like a clear retell that stays on topic and uses details from the source, not guesses or personal stories. Students often get stuck naming only one fun detail, mixing up the order, or repeating exact words without showing they understood the idea.

Ways to Teach It

  • After a read-aloud, students place three picture cards in order and use them to retell the main parts to a partner.
  • Ask students, “What was the speaker mostly teaching us, and what two details helped you know?”
  • Play a one-minute animal video, then have students write one main idea and two details on sticky notes.
  • After a school announcement, ask students to tell a partner the main message and one detail they need to remember.
