What This Standard Means
Students need to listen closely to a read-aloud, video, or oral presentation and track the main details. They should ask questions when something is unclear and answer questions using details they heard, not guesses from the pictures or their own opinions.
Mastery looks like a student saying, “The boy lost his dog because he left the gate open,” or asking, “Where did the dog go first?” Common trouble spots are forgetting details, giving one-word answers, asking off-topic questions, or repeating a question instead of answering it.
Ways to Teach It
- Read a short picture book aloud, then have students place three picture cards in order and tell one detail from each part.
- Ask, “What is one question you still have about what we heard?” and have partners answer using a detail from the text.
- Play a 60-second audio clip, then ask students to draw one key detail and tell it to you in a sentence.
- After a school announcement, have students name who, what, and where details they heard before the class moves on.
