CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.1.1
The Standard
Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts · Reading Standards for Informational Text
What This Standard Means
Students need to ask and answer who, what, where, when, why, and how questions about an informational text. They should point back to words or pictures in the text to support their answers, not just guess or use memory from life.
Mastery looks like a student hearing or reading a short nonfiction book and giving answers tied to a page, photo, heading, or sentence. Students often get stuck by asking off-topic questions, answering from background knowledge only, or missing details shown in pictures.
Ways to Teach It
- Hands-on: Give partners sticky notes to place on pages that answer teacher-made question cards after reading a short nonfiction book.
- Prompt: After reading, ask, “What question did the author answer for us, and where did you find the answer?”
- Quick assessment: Read one page aloud, then have students draw or write one question and one answer from that page.
- Real-world connection: Use a school lunch menu and ask students to find answers to questions like, “What fruit is served on Tuesday?”
