CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.K.1
The Standard
With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts · Reading Standards for Literature
What This Standard Means
Students need to listen to or look through a story and ask simple who, what, where, when, why, and how questions about what happened. They also need to answer questions using details from the pictures or words, with teacher support.
Mastery looks like a child pointing to a page and saying, “The bear is sad because his kite broke.” Students often get stuck giving guesses from their own life instead of the story, or answering with one-word replies that do not show the detail they used.
Ways to Teach It
- Read a short picture book and give students question cards labeled who, what, where, why to ask about each page.
- Prompt students to say or draw, “I wonder…” and “I know because…” after a read-aloud.
- Show one story page and ask, “What is happening, and how do you know?” then listen for a text or picture detail.
- Connect to playground talk by asking students to ask and answer questions about a class photo from recess.
