The Standard
Confirm understanding of a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media by asking and answering questions about key details and requesting clarification if something is not understood.

What This Standard Means
Kindergarten students need to listen to a read-aloud, video, speaker, or audio clip and show they understood the main parts. They should answer simple who, what, where, when, and why questions. They also need to ask questions when they missed something or feel confused.
Mastery looks like a child naming key details and using phrases like “Can you say that again?” or “What does that mean?” Many students get stuck by retelling tiny details, guessing without listening, or staying quiet when confused. Model the exact words to use and practice often.
Ways to Teach It
- After a read-aloud, give students picture cards and have them sort them into “in the story” and “not in the story.”
- Ask, “What part was confusing, and what question could you ask to help you understand it?”
- Play a short audio clip, then ask each student one who, what, or where question on a clipboard checklist.
- After the school nurse gives a short talk, students ask one question and tell a partner one detail they learned.
