The Standard

Ask and answer questions about what a speaker says in order to gather additional information or clarify something that is not understood.

What This Standard Means

Students need to listen to a speaker, notice when they need more information, and ask a clear question. They also need to answer questions about what was said, using details they heard instead of guessing.

Mastery looks like a child raising a hand to ask, “Where did it happen?” or “What do you mean by habitat?” and then using the answer. Students often get stuck repeating unrelated questions, forgetting what the speaker said, or asking comments disguised as questions.

Ways to Teach It

  • Have partners share a mystery object from a bag, then classmates ask who, what, where, when, why, or how questions before guessing.
  • After a classmate tells about a weekend event, ask students to write or say one question that would help them understand more.
  • Read a two-sentence announcement aloud, then have students answer one detail question and ask one clarifying question on a sticky note.
  • Invite the school nurse or custodian to speak for three minutes, then students ask questions to learn details about the job.
