The Standard

Ask and answer questions in order to seek help, get information, or clarify something that is not understood.

What This Standard Means

Students need to ask a clear question when they are confused, need help, or want more information. They also need to answer questions from classmates or adults with words, gestures, or details that make sense.

Mastery looks like a child saying, “Can you show me again?” or “What does that word mean?” without waiting for the teacher to guess. Students often get stuck by staying quiet, repeating “I don’t know,” or asking questions that are too vague, like “What?”

Ways to Teach It

  • Hands-on activity: Put mystery objects in bags, have students ask one question before reaching in, then answer a partner’s question after feeling it.
  • Discussion prompt: After a read-aloud, ask, “What part confused you, and what question could help you understand it?”
  • Quick assessment: During centers, note which students ask for help using a full question instead of pointing or waiting.
  • Real-world connection: Practice asking the librarian, nurse, or office staff one prepared question during a short school walk.
