The Standard
Ask questions to clear up any confusion about the topics and texts under discussion.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to notice when something does not make sense during a read-aloud, partner talk, or class discussion. Then they need to ask a clear question that helps them understand the topic or text better, instead of staying quiet or changing the subject.
Mastery looks like a first grader saying, “What does that word mean?” or “Why did she do that?” at the right time. Students often get stuck because they cannot name what confused them, or they make comments instead of asking questions. Sentence stems and teacher modeling help a lot.
Ways to Teach It
- Hands-on activity: Give students picture cards from a story, pause at tricky parts, and have them hold up a question mark card when confused.
- Discussion prompt: After a read-aloud, ask, “What part made your brain stop and wonder?” and record student questions on chart paper.
- Quick assessment: During partner retells, listen for one student question that clears up confusion, then jot the student’s name and question.
- Real-world connection: Practice asking questions about a school lunch menu, such as “What is in this?” or “When do we get fruit?”
