What This Standard Means

Students need to give a short spoken presentation that makes a clear claim or shares findings from reading, research, or discussion. Their ideas should be in an order that makes sense, with facts, details, and descriptions that help listeners understand the main point.

Mastery sounds organized, focused, and easy to hear. Students look up from notes, speak clearly, and use a volume the room can hear. Many students get stuck by listing facts with no clear point, reading every word from slides, or adding details that do not support the main idea.

Ways to Teach It

  • Have students sort note cards into a logical order, then practice a two-minute presentation using only the cards as prompts.
  • Ask students to write, What is my main claim, and which three details will help my audience believe or understand it?
  • Use a simple checklist during partner practice: clear claim, logical order, three supporting details, eye contact, volume, pronunciation.
  • Connect to a school board-style pitch where students present one change they want at school and support it with evidence.
