What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students organize a short presentation around a clear claim or finding. They select strong facts, details, and examples, then speak with steady eye contact, volume, and clear pronunciation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Listeners can identify the claim or main finding and follow the ideas in a logical order. The speaker highlights key points, uses relevant evidence, and speaks clearly without reading every word.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may give every detail equal weight or include facts that do not support the main point. They may read directly from notes, confuse eye contact with staring, or treat adequate volume as shouting.
How to Assess It
- Give students five minutes to prepare a one-minute answer to: “What school rule should change, and why?” Check for a clear claim, two relevant details, eye contact, volume, and pronunciation.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups claim, evidence, and unrelated-detail cards to sort, then use the best cards to build a one-minute presentation.
Ask students to write which speaking habit helps an audience most, then defend their choice with an example.
Run a presentation relay where students speak for 30 seconds and earn points for focus, evidence, eye contact, volume, and pronunciation.
Have students present a two-minute recommendation for a school club purchase to a mock student council.
