What This Standard Means
Students need to present an idea or claim clearly, then support it with the best facts, details, and examples. They should organize their talk so listeners can follow the point without guessing. They also need to choose what matters most, not read every note they found.
Mastery looks like a short, focused presentation with a clear claim, strong evidence, and smooth transitions. The speaker looks up often, speaks loudly enough, and pronounces words clearly. Students often get stuck by listing facts with no main point, adding weak examples, reading from slides, or speaking too quietly.
Ways to Teach It
- Give students three source cards and have them build a one-minute claim, evidence, explanation talk using only five bullet notes.
- Ask students to write: Which detail best proves your claim, and which detail should you cut because it distracts?
- Use a 4-box checklist during partner presentations: clear claim, strong evidence, eye contact, audible voice.
- Have students present a recommendation for a school lunch change using survey results, one fact, and one student quote.
