What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read challenging stories, plays, and poems on their own. They identify key events, characters, lessons, and meanings by using details from the text.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student reads an unfamiliar, challenging literary text without teacher support. The student retells accurately, answers literal and inferential questions, and cites details for each answer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may decode every word but lose track of characters, events, or meaning. They may guess from pictures instead of using text details. They may avoid rereading when a passage becomes confusing.
How to Assess It
- Give students an unfamiliar one-page story to read independently. Ask: What happened, what can you infer about the main character, and which two details support your answer?

Ways to Teach It
Cut a short story into event cards; students read, sequence the cards, and explain which text clues fixed the order.
After reading a poem, students write: What is the speaker feeling, and which words or images reveal that feeling?
Play Genre Challenge: students draw a story, drama, or poetry card, read a short passage, then answer a matching comprehension question.
Have students choose a library book for a younger reader and write a note explaining its plot, challenge level, and appeal.
