Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts · Reading Standards for Literature
What This Standard Means
Students need to read grade 3 stories, plays, and poems with independence. They should follow plot, describe characters, understand lessons, notice how poems and dramas work, and use text evidence when they talk or write about reading.
Mastery looks like a student choosing a suitable text, reading it with stamina, and explaining what happened and why it matters without heavy teacher support. Students often get stuck with older vocabulary, figurative language, shifts in speaker, and drama format, especially stage directions and character names.
Ways to Teach It
- Hands-on activity: Give pairs a short play scene, highlighters, and role cards, then have them rehearse using stage directions accurately.
- Discussion or writing prompt: After reading a poem, ask students, “What picture does this poem put in your mind, and which words created it?”
- Quick assessment: Use a one-page story and ask students to write the problem, solution, and one sentence of text evidence.
- Real-world connection: Have students compare a book character’s choice to a choice someone might face at school or on a team.
