What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read varied stories and poems and show they understand what happened and what the text means. They use details to discuss characters, events, lessons, and feelings. They also use support when a text is harder.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students read an unfamiliar story or poem with steady accuracy and explain its meaning. They identify key events, characters, lessons, and supporting details, using help only when the text becomes more demanding.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think reading every word correctly means they understood the text. They may retell minor details, miss the main events, or give answers without text evidence.
How to Assess It
- Give students an unfamiliar short story and ask: “What problem does the character face, how is it solved, and which detail supports your answer?”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs mixed event cards from a short story, then have them sequence the cards and explain each choice using the text.
After reading a poem, ask students to write: “What feeling does the poet create, and which words create it?”
Play Evidence Match by having teams pair question cards with sentence strips that provide the strongest supporting detail.
Read a story about a playground conflict, then compare the character’s solution with choices students could make during recess.
