By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories and poetry, in the grades 2—3 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.

What This Standard Means
Students need to read second grade stories and poems with enough accuracy, fluency, and understanding to talk about what happened, who was involved, and what the author is saying. They should handle some harder third grade level texts with teacher support, such as rereading, partner reading, vocabulary help, or guided questions.
Mastery looks like a student choosing details from the text to explain characters, events, feelings, and lessons. In poems, they notice rhythm, repeated words, and simple imagery. Students often get stuck on longer sentences, unfamiliar words, shifts in speaker, and answering from memory instead of using the text.
Ways to Teach It
- Hands-on activity: Give pairs a short poem on sentence strips and have them rebuild it, then read it aloud for meaning and rhythm.
- Discussion or writing prompt: After reading, ask, “Which part proves what the character learned?” and have students underline the evidence.
- Quick assessment: Listen to each student read one page, then ask two text-based questions about events, characters, or feelings.
- Real-world connection: Let students compare a story character’s problem to a playground or classroom problem and explain what advice they would give.
