What This Standard Means
Students need to read grade-level stories, plays, and poems on their own and make sense of them. They should track plot, characters, theme, speaker, and structure without needing the teacher to explain every page.
Mastery looks like steady independent reading with clear evidence from the text in talk and writing. Students can handle longer sentences, older or unusual words, figurative language, shifts in time, and poems or dramas that do not read like regular stories. They often get stuck when the text has dense description, implied feelings, multiple characters, or a theme that is not directly stated.
Ways to Teach It
- Give pairs a short drama scene, assign roles, read it aloud twice, then mark stage directions and character motives with sticky notes.
- Ask students to write: What did the main character learn, and which two lines from the text prove it?
- Use a three-question exit ticket: What happened, what confused you, and what line helped you understand the theme?
- Have students compare a poem about friendship with a song lyric or greeting card message about friendship, then name the stronger image.
