What Students Need to Do
- Students independently read challenging fifth-grade stories, dramas, and poems. They follow events, interpret language, identify themes, and support their understanding with details from the text.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students independently read unfamiliar stories, dramas, and poems written at a challenging fifth-grade level. They accurately summarize, infer, explain themes, and support their thinking with relevant details.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may read fluently but miss themes, character motives, or shifts in the plot. They may overlook stage directions, interpret poems only literally, or abandon a text when sentences become complex.
How to Assess It
- Give students an unfamiliar, one-page story, scene, or poem at the upper fifth-grade level. Ask for a summary, one inference, and two supporting details without assistance.

Ways to Teach It
Students arrange event, character, and quotation cards from a challenging story, then explain how the pieces reveal its theme.
Ask students to write: What challenge does the character face, and which two details best show how the character responds?
Play Evidence Match by having students independently pair inference cards with supporting quotations from a story, scene, or poem.
Students write a library recommendation that identifies a suitable reader, summarizes the text, and explains one challenging feature.
