The Standard

Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary.

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts

What This Standard Means

Students need to notice when a word they read does not sound right or make sense. They should use the words and sentences around it to check the word, fix it if needed, and reread the sentence so it sounds smooth and clear.

Mastery looks like a student pausing after a miscued word, checking meaning, correcting the word, and continuing without losing the idea of the text. Students often get stuck by guessing from the first letter, skipping hard words, or reading on even when the sentence no longer makes sense.

Ways to Teach It

  • Give pairs a short passage with covered target words, have them read, predict each word from context, then reveal and reread the sentence.
  • Ask students to write about a time a sentence stopped making sense and explain how rereading helped them fix it.
  • Listen to each student read four sentences aloud, marking whether they notice and correct one planted misread word.
  • Use a recipe, game rule card, or bus schedule and have students fix misread words by checking what would make sense.
