What Students Need to Do: Students monitor whether each word sounds right and fits the meaning of the sentence. When something seems wrong, they reread and try a better word.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students pause when a word sounds wrong or makes no sense. They reread, correct the word, and explain which clues in the sentence helped.
Common Misconceptions: Students may guess a word from its first letter without checking the rest of the sentence. They may keep reading after a mistake, or reread without changing the incorrect word.
How to Assess It: Give students a short passage with one challenging word and ask them to read it aloud. Ask, “How did the sentence help you check that word?”

Lesson moves

Give pairs sentence strips and three word cards, then have them choose the word that makes sense and read the sentence aloud.
After a short read-aloud, ask students to write about one word they corrected and the sentence clue that helped.
Play Context Clue Detective by reading sentences with one mistaken word and awarding points when teams identify and fix it.
Use a classroom schedule or lunch menu and ask students to correct any word that does not fit the surrounding information.
