CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.2.4c
The Standard
Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to notice when a word they read does not make sense, sound right, or match the sentence. They should use nearby words, picture clues when available, and meaning to check their reading. If needed, they reread and fix the word without waiting for the teacher.
Mastery looks like a student pausing after an error, trying a better word, and rereading the sentence smoothly. Many students either keep going after a mistake or guess from the first letter only. Others can fix the word but forget to reread for meaning and fluency.
Ways to Teach It
- Give partners sentence strips with one silly wrong word, and have them swap in a word that makes the sentence make sense.
- Ask students to write about a time they caught their own reading mistake and explain what clue helped them fix it.
- Listen to each student read four sentences, mark any self-corrections, and ask, “How did you know that word fit?”
- Use a cafeteria menu or class schedule and have students reread when a word choice would make the message confusing.
