CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.3.4c
The Standard
Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary.
Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
What This Standard Means
Students need to notice when a word they read does not sound right or does not make sense. They should use the sentence, nearby words, and the meaning of the passage to check the word, then reread to fix it.
Mastery looks like a student pausing after an error, trying a better word, and rereading the sentence smoothly with the correct meaning. Students often get stuck by guessing from the first letter, skipping hard words, or reading on even when the sentence stops making sense.
Ways to Teach It
- Give partners a short passage with five tricky words covered, and have them use surrounding words to predict and then reveal each word.
- Ask students to write about a time they fixed a word while reading, using the sentence frame, I knew it was wrong because...
- Listen to each student read a paragraph and mark one tally when they self-correct without teacher help.
- Show a recipe or game direction card, and ask how rereading helps when one word changes what you should do.
