What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students prepare ideas and information before speaking with others. They listen closely, connect their comments to earlier points, and explain their own views clearly. They adjust their approach for different partners and settings.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student arrives with relevant notes or ideas. During discussion, the student listens, refers to specific comments, asks useful questions, and explains agreement or disagreement with reasons.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think participating means talking often or repeating what someone else said. They may interrupt, ignore opposing views, or disagree without explaining why.

How to Assess It

Pair students and ask, “Should homework be optional?” Check whether each student states a claim, gives a reason, paraphrases a partner, and responds respectfully.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups blocks and role cards, then require them to plan a structure aloud before building it together.

  2. Ask, “When should someone change their mind?” Students write a claim, discuss it, then revise using a partner’s idea.

  3. Play Discussion Relay, where each student must paraphrase the previous speaker before adding a new point or respectful challenge.

  4. Have students discuss a real school issue, such as lunch waste, then present one group recommendation to the principal.
