What This Standard Means
Students need to come to discussions ready, listen closely, take turns, respond to what others say, and add their own ideas in a clear way. They should use evidence, ask useful questions, and adjust their language for the group and purpose.
Mastery looks like a student who can stay on topic, build from a classmate’s point, disagree respectfully, and help the group move forward. Students often get stuck repeating their own idea, ignoring others, speaking too vaguely, or staying silent because they are not prepared.
Ways to Teach It
- Hands-on: Give groups quote cards from a text and have students sort them into agree, disagree, and question piles before discussion.
- Prompt: Write one sentence that begins, “I agree with ___ because,” then one that begins, “I see it differently because.”
- Quick assessment: During a two-minute partner talk, tally each student’s evidence use, question asked, and response to a partner.
- Real-world connection: Compare class discussion norms to a team meeting, where people must listen, add facts, and decide next steps together.
