What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the main regions of the electromagnetic spectrum and compare their wavelengths, frequencies, and energies. They connect each region to common uses, such as communication, imaging, heating, and sterilization.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can place radio waves through gamma rays in order and describe how wavelength, frequency, and energy change across the spectrum. They can select a suitable region for a given use and explain why it fits.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think all electromagnetic radiation is visible or harmful. They often confuse electromagnetic waves with sound waves or think longer wavelengths carry more energy. Some reverse the relationship between wavelength and frequency.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket asking students to order the seven spectrum regions, match three regions to uses, and explain one match using wavelength, frequency, or energy.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups labeled spectrum cards and a long paper strip, then have them arrange regions and add wavelength, frequency, energy, and use notes.
Ask students to explain why a hospital uses X-rays for bones but radio waves for communication.
Play a spectrum sorting relay where teams place region, characteristic, and use cards into correct sets.
Have students inspect a microwave oven, television remote, sunscreen label, and medical image, then identify the electromagnetic region involved in each.
