What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use wave models to describe light by wavelength, frequency, and amplitude. They observe and predict reflection, refraction, absorption, transmission, and diffraction when light meets different materials.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a wave diagram, students identify wavelength and amplitude and compare frequency and wavelength in the same medium. They can draw a light path and explain whether light reflects, bends, passes through, spreads, or is absorbed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often think light needs air to travel or that eyes send rays toward objects. They may confuse reflection with refraction or say light always bends when entering a new material. Some mistake amplitude for color instead of intensity.
How to Assess It
- Give students a wave diagram and a light ray entering glass. Ask them to label amplitude and wavelength, then draw and name what happens to the ray.

Ways to Teach It
Set up flashlight stations with a mirror, water cup, black paper, and diffraction grating; students sketch reflection, refraction, absorption, and diffraction.
Ask students to explain why a straw looks bent in water, using a labeled light path and the word refraction.
Play a diagram sort where teams match pictures to wavelength, amplitude, reflection, refraction, absorption, transmission, or diffraction.
Compare eyeglasses, mirrors, and tinted windows; students identify whether each mainly refracts, reflects, transmits, or absorbs visible light.
