What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use diagrams and investigations to describe visible light as energy carried by transverse waves. They compare wavelengths across the visible spectrum and predict how materials reflect, refract, absorb, or transmit light. They trace light energy changing into heat, motion, or electricity.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can label a transverse wave, order visible colors from red to violet, and compare their wavelengths. They can predict what light will do when it meets different materials and explain energy changes in devices such as solar fans.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a wave drawing shows light traveling along an up and down path. They may think white light contains no colors or that all materials either fully block or fully transmit light. They also confuse reflected light with emitted light.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Draw a transverse wave and mark one wavelength. Then explain what happens when white light passes through a prism and when sunlight powers a solar fan.

Ways to Teach It
Shine a flashlight at a mirror, clear cup of water, wax paper, and black paper, then record reflection, refraction, transmission, or absorption.
Ask students to explain why a straw looks bent in water and support their explanation with a labeled light path sketch.
Play a card sort matching spectrum colors, relative wavelengths, material effects, and examples of light changing into heat, motion, or electricity.
Test a solar calculator under sunlight, shade, and a flashlight, then compare its response and identify the energy change.
