What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students follow energy from sunlight or another light source into a device or material. They name the new energy form and explain each step in the change.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a solar oven, solar panel, or solar-powered fan, students can draw an accurate energy chain. They distinguish direct heating from changes that pass through electrical energy.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often say energy is created, used up, or stored by every device. They may call all solar energy heat, or skip electrical energy between a solar panel and a moving motor.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Draw and label the energy changes in a solar-powered fan, starting with sunlight. Then explain why covering the solar panel stops the blades.

Ways to Teach It
Connect a small solar cell to a motor, shine a lamp on it, and record blade motion as the lamp distance changes.
Write two sentences comparing the energy changes in a solar oven and a solar-powered toy car.
