What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify how mechanical and electromagnetic waves are used in communication, medicine, imaging, heating, and detection. They trace energy from a source, through a wave, to a receiver and describe the result.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can explain how a device such as a microwave oven, radio, or ultrasound scanner uses waves. They correctly name the source, wave type, receiver, and evidence of energy transfer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think waves carry matter from the source to the receiver or that all waves require a material medium. They may also confuse wave energy with frequency or assume all electromagnetic waves are harmful.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: Choose a cell phone, microwave oven, or ultrasound scanner. Identify the wave used and explain how its energy produces a useful result.
